Students help to preserve mountain meadows (and more)
Seit 1996 kommen alljährlich im August rund zwanzig Studenten und Studentinnen von verschiedenen Hochschulen ins Osterzgebirge, um gemeinsam eine Woche lang praktischen Naturschutz zu betreiben – freiwillig und unentgeltlich. Neben teilweise schwerer körperlicher Arbeit wird hier ein vielfältiges Programm mit Exkursionen, Vorträgen und Diskussionsrunden geboten. Jahrzehntelang organisierte unser Partnerverein Grüne Liga Osterzgebirge das Praktikum - Erfahrungsberichte von vor 2023 sind hier zu finden.
Every year in August since 1996, around twenty students from various universities come to the Eastern Ore Mountains to gain work experience in practical nature conservation for a week – voluntarily and free of charge. In addition to sometimes hard physical work, a diverse program with excursions, lectures and discussion groups is offered. For decades the training programme was organised by the Green League Eastern Ore Mountains - find some pre-2023 participants' feedback and images on these pages.
Im Jahrgang 2023 kamen die Studierenden aus der Slowakei, Indien, den USA und aus Deutschland - kommuniziert wurde auf Englisch. Allesamt belegen „grüne Studiengänge“ an deutschen Unis und der Uni von Bratislava. Das Praktikum brachte sie in Kontakt mit möglichen späteren Arbeitsaufgaben – ein wesentlicher Grund, warum die meisten daran teilnahmen. An der Wiese „Himmelsleiter“ pflegten sie Gelände mit seltenen Pflanzenarten; im Botanischen Garten Schellerhau packten sie ebenfalls an. Auf den Schellerhauer Weißeritzwiesen schnitten sie unter anderem Gehölz zurück, das offene Flächen und damit lichtliebende, seltene Pflanzen zu überwachsen drohte. Auf Birkhuhn-Lebensräumen am Kahleberg entfernten sie in Kooperation mit dem Staatsbetrieb Sachsenforst Reisig.
In August 2023 student participants from Slovakia, India, the US and from Germany joined the Schellerhau Conservation Training - they communicated in English. All the students are enrolled in "green" courses of studies at their respective universities in Germany and Bratislava. The internship offered an opportunity for them to gain work experience in some potential job tasks. This is why most of them decided to join the training in the first place. At a sloping meadow called "Stairway to Heaven" they cleared away grass to support rare plant species. In the Schellerhau Botanical Garden they supported local staff in their land management tasks. At the Schellerhau Weißeritz Meadows they cut back shrubs to offer more space and light to rare plant species which where in danger of being overgrown. On habitats of Black Grouse at Mount Kahleberg the students cleared away brushwood (in cooperation with the Saxon State Forestry).

Neben der Instandhaltung von unterschiedlichen Habitaten gibt es genügend Zeit, um die Region zu erkunden und sich auszutauschen.
